The Viagra can't damage your penis, but it sure is getting you down, no pun intended.

Once you solve the underlying cause of the problem, you won't need the Viagra any longer, in any case. Your problem is a bad case of performance anxiety. Because you had an occasional problem obtaining or maintaining an erection with your past girlfriend, you lost your confidence and started to worry.

The chemicals that run inside your body when you worry actually prevent a man from obtaining an erection. The best way around this problem is to not put pressure on yourself to become hard. If you can tell yourself, 'So what if I don't get hard or if I lose my erection, because there is more to sexual pleasure than intercourse, and I can still give my partner pleasure, erection or not.'

Paradoxically, once you take the pressure off of yourself, your body should respond just fine. If you still have problems, which I don't think you will, a good sex therapist can help you.
